What IS IDENTITY?

FINDING IDENTITY IN ENGLISH

Identity defines any new inward and outward feature of a person. Human identity is a profoundly confusing and complex matter. One that all people face in the quest for meaning and self-discovery. Identity can be described as who a person is, what hobbies they love, their favourite foods, favourite movies, gender identity and sexual orientation, and so on. No one is completely sure of their identity as people are constantly changing, which leads to an attempt to find one 's self again. This quest to discover one 's identity has indeed been identified over the past few decades in so many ways? Such as in essays, podcast, poems, short stories and so on.

Main/In-depth Analyses

The pieces below illustrate in-depth the idea of identity in various of ways

Annie Dillard

The essay Sojourners

This essay metaphorically depicts the connection and relations between mangrove trees and human identity. Dillard explains that once a mangrove tree is adrift, it's capable of finding a way to live freely and independently, just like how humans can never be entirely sure about where they're going to go or whom they're going to become, they simply thrive to live. Dillard continues discussing human nature and how it is ever-changing, evolving, and unclear. This source surrounds the idea of identity because it initiates that you cannot presume the identification of another. After all, our identity is something that is continuously evolving.

Hosseini Khaled

The story A Thousand Splendid Suns

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a story of the domination of women and how even under such harsh conditions there is still hope for them. Hosseini explores the problem of how female identity is viewed in Afganistan. The theme of identity can be seen throughout the story of how women have been portrayed in this period and society, as well as, around the world. The story further emphasizes that women can change how they are portrayed in society, that everybody can change how their identity is seen if they are determined and willing to fight for it. This shows us that our identity is not something that can stay the same, and is not something that can be dictated by society’s stereotypes.

The podcast Evolution

The essay Evolution can be seen to explore the idea of identity throughout. “Evolution”, distinguishes her extraordinary childhood dream, that one day she would become a famous singer. With her current entity as a teacher in a suburb in Philadelphia. She explains that, despite not having had an immense influence on the world, she is happy with her life as an active member of her family and society. However, when she was younger this vision was more of her as an individual. That, though, has changed along with her age and perspective. A major theme in this essay, "Evolution," is that, based on circumstances and personal growth, one 's identity can change over time.

ESSAY

“Once More to the Lake”, by E.B White

“Once More to the Lake”, by E.B White was an essay in which a father struggles to find his identity. The lake demonstrates that White is denying his own mortality.  The dominant impression of the short story follows the theme of identity, the passage of time and how memories fade in the face of change, relate to how one’s identity will always be changing.

NOVEL

"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald portrays almost every character's identity as untrustworthy and deceitful throughout the ‘The Great Gatsby’. In all that, Gatsby resembles the critical elements of the American dream. It would seem evident that in the novel, Fitzgerald presents Gatsby as more of a man who has forged his own identity (his sense of self) in an attempt to achieve his wildest dreams and ambitions.
